SF books and movies - What destroys the aliens?

In M.Night Shyamalan's "Signs" it was water that is harmful to aliens. But i think the most viable is the earth bacterias. we have adapted to many bacteria and virus and if there are any aliens that can travel to us then they should bring many medications.
